As we usher in a new year, a lot of people would be spending a lot of time coming up with a New Year’s resolution. It could be anything that we want to change in ourselves and how we perceive our lives and the world we live in. But more than creating vague statements that may often be too good to be true or too difficult to be feasible, why not start by making affirmations, instead. One such statement we could try to live by is this: “It’s worth burning myself out like a match as long as others receive the light and warmth I dispatch.”
Have you become desensitized?
Living in a world where we see selfishness and callousness all around us can demoralize us and desensitize us. It can numb our feelings and make us turn a blind eye on what society needs to create more helpful and compassionate individuals. This is also the reason why most of us struggle with ;lending a hand to help others. Serving people who will not likely give us anything back in return is not a top priority because our social norms these days are mostly centered on pleasing ourselves and serving our own selfish purposes. But if we try to turn things around and change our worldview, we can make a huge impact on how we live our lives and how others may benefit from our love and generosity.
Knowing your goals
What do you want to achieve in 2019? Whatever your goal is, if you add serving others to your best abilities as another component, it will change how you live your life and how others’ lives will become more blessed because of your generosity. In this light, you might want to consider going beyond the extra mile to serve others.
Realigning your purpose
Serving others does not equate to forgetting your own welfare and letting go of opportunities to prosper in your own right. Rather, it adds a special element to how you will achieve success in your future undertakings. Suppose you decide to invest your money in stocks or start a new business to grow your finances. Working on your dream to become financially independent without living paycheck to paycheck will have more depth and more purpose if you do it not only for the sole purpose of advancing your own life but also in the pursuit of having more so that you can share more to those who are in need.
If you keep turning a blind eye on how others may benefit from your generosity, you will only solely focus on how to serve your own interests. While this track may help you become rich at a quicker span of time, the reality is that your material gains will not matter as much because there is no fulfillment attached to it. You may continue growing your wealth as you go along but unless you put other people as beneficiaries, even acquiring all the fame and fortune the world has to offer will not bring you joy and contentment.
To make a better and more fulfilled life that is centered on purpose and service to others,
look beyond yourself and see how God can use you as an instrument to serve others.
