As adults, we can’t help but set expectations on how we want things to work out. Often, these expectations are based on what we believe can make us happy – a lucrative job, a lavish lifestyle, a good person to marry, and a family of our own. However, no matter how hard we try to turn these expectations into reality, we can’t always dictate what happens in the future.
Somewhere along the way, we realized that finding the job of our dreams is not as easy as it sounds. Living a lavish lifestyle is neither practical nor realistic because we still haven’t found a way to amass great wealth and fortune. We may have dated several times, but up to now, we still haven’t found the right person to marry. The clock is ticking and here we are, still single, living paycheck to paycheck, uncertain of what the future holds for us.
Being grateful
There are a lot of people who are experiencing these disappointments in life. These people had to endure disappointments because they couldn’t yet achieve the aspirations they had when they were younger. It’s too easy to get caught up in these disappointments when you want some things so badly that you cannot appreciate the other good things that are happening in your life. The sad thing is that most of us are ungrateful because we are constantly on the lookout for the things that we do not have, instead of the beautiful things that God blessed us with.
On setting our own expectations
Is it bad to have expectations of our own? Is it wrong to dream of better things? Of course not. God wants us to be happy and that happiness will always include complex elements. That is perfectly fine. What we need to remember, though, is that God has a plan. We may have made plans on our own but ultimately, God is the one who directs and controls our future. Our fate depends on what God wants to happen in our lives. While there are many uncertainties, trust that God will turn things around and bring us what we need and what we deserve in His perfect time.
Waiting for Answers
While waiting, the best thing to do as loyal followers of God is to pray. Talk to God and open your heart to Him in prayer. He alone knows and understands all your heart’s desires. By lifting all your doubts, worries, and uncertainties to the Lord, you will eventually find the peace and contentment that you so crave. And when disappointments come into our lives, hold on to your faith and know that God is there with you, so be strong and carry on. You are never alone. God’s plans are not revealed to man just yet, but eventually, you will find a happiness that exudes all your expectations. You just have to hand on and trust in God’s will. God’s will may not be easy to understand, and sometimes, we don’t need to understand; rather, we need to accept His will and hold on to him, knowing that He alone holds the key to our salvation.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
– Jeremiah 29:11
